Wiring harnesses for V700, V7 Special, Ambassador, 850 GT, 850 GT California, Eldorado, and 850 California Police motorcycles
I started down a slippery slope when I decided to make my own wiring harnesses for a customer's project. It all started out because the wiring harness that came with his V700 was 25 pounds worth of a black wire mess. Nothing was original and nothing was salvagable. Rather than cobble something together using non-standard colors and terminals without strain relief, I decided I would do it properly. I soon realized that there are far more main harnesses, sub-harnesses, and variations than I originally anticipated, AND, determining the correct gauge, color, length, and terminals to use was a lengthy, painstaking process.
What I ended up with is the knowledge, tools, and supplies to create every possible main and sub-harness for Moto Guzzi loop frames. Except where noted, each is a replication of the original Moto Guzzi wiring harness. I use the same gauge of wire, the same colors and tracers (stripes), the same length and sheathing, the same terminals, etc. All terminals are of the double crimp, strain relief variety.
Pricing: Main harnesses and sub-harnesses are priced individually.
Custom harnesses: Have you replaced your original fuse box or ignition switch with an aftermarket version that uses spade terminals? Perhaps you have an aftermarket handlebar switch and you would like to use factory colors? Just let me know and I am happy to help. Typically no extra charge!
Shipping: Within the United States, shipping is via USPS Priority Mail. Only actual postage cost is charged, typically around USD $11.35 or less (I use flat rate boxes when that is the most cost effective solution). Outside of the United States, shipping is via the United States Postal Service using the most economical means available. Charges and delivery times vary from country to country but I post as affordably as possible.
Ordering: There is a lot to pick and choose from here and I'm more than happy to help you figure out what you need. Please feel free to give me a call (480-361-7275) or send an email to greg>at>thisoldtractor.com. I'll work with you to determine what you want and need, I'll give you a written estimate beforehand, and I'll build your harness specifically to suit your requirements. You can pay me by personal check (preferred for customers within the USA), money order, cashiers check, or PayPal (preferred for customers outside of the USA).
Do something nice for your motorcycle! Replace your 40 year old wiring harness with a brand new harness. Restore original reliability and electrical functionality. Installation is simple and straightforward with the wiring harness installation instructions.
Testimonials
A customer from Germany:
Outstanding work - looks really good. Nothing like I could create on my own. Also the wiring harness sold over here for the V7 Special is not comparable to yours - it is much more simple, the connectors are the cheapest you can get and not the strain relief ones. Once again, thanks for the fast transaction ; - )
A customer from the eastern United States:
After burning up three generators, I decided to buy a set of wiring harnesses from Greg Bender to replace every wire that had anything to do with the charging system. Greg makes excellent harnesses [snip]. And of course the thisoldtractor site tells you everything you need to know about installationpriceless.
A customer from the northeast United States:
Wonderful! Very nice indeed.
A customer from the northern United States:
Just wanted to say what a nice harness set up you made. You're very talented. DC wiring is not my strong point. Just about done. You made it easy.
Charlie Mullendore of Antietam Classic Cycle:
Should have bought your harnesses for this shiny turd I'm working on right now instead of reusing the original harness. But the customer didn't want to spend the $$ on new, so he's paying me to patch up the old one. False economy
A customer from the eastern United States:
Thanks! All of those little harnesses fit perfectly!
A customer from the northern United States:
Thanks for being so fast with the harness.
A customer from the eastern United States:
Just wanted to let you know that I finally got a chance to start rewiring the Eldo and your harnesses are excellent. I've printed out a diagram and some photos from your web site and stuck them on a wall in my shop for reference.

Battery ground Originally, the terminal at the battery was a post style terminal. Since that style of terminal is very rare today with motorcycle batteries, I've chosen to fit a lug to accept a 6 mm bolt. Ground cable is 6 AWG and is 450 mm (~17 3⁄4 in) in total length. If you require something different, please let me know. |

Battery positive cable For civilian applications, this cable is already integrated into the main harness. For police applications, this cable is already integrated with wires to the voltage regulator and ignition switch. Should you wish a separate cable, however, this is what you'll need. Originally, the terminal at the battery was a post style terminal. Since that style of terminal is very rare today with motorcycle batteries, I've chosen to fit a lug to accept a 6 mm bolt. Cable is 6 AWG and is 830 mm (~32 1⁄2 in) in total length. If you require something different, please let me know. |

Wiring to connect the starter relay Wiring and terminals are specific to each charging system and starter. Connection to the neutral switch: I've chosen to use a 6 mm ring terminal instead of a 5 mm ring terminal on the black wire. Originally the neutral switch provided the ground for the relay, requiring the transmission to be in neutral for the motorcycle to be started. Since so many people permanently ground the relay using a 6 mm bolt on the transmission, I've decided to simply provide the 6 mm ring terminal. Should you desire the original 5 mm ring terminal, I will be happy to oblige. Magneti Marelli note: Early Magneti Marelli starters required a separate ground wire. The modern replacement solenoid also requires a separate ground wire. Given the inconsistent need for a ground wire, I've included one with all the Magneti Marelli sub-harnesses, just to be sure you have everything you need. Alternator note: Originally, an unfused wire was run from the voltage regulator to the relay. This harness uses a more universal 6 mm ring terminal to connect to the battery positive terminal. Length is 350 mm, which should work for just about any battery/relay installation. Please specify charging system and starter combination: Magneti Marelli, Bosch, Alternator. |

| GEN-GROUND |
Generator ground Originally the generator was grounded through the body of the generator, through the bracket, to the engine block. Painted generator bodies can insulate the generator and prevent this necessary grounding point. This short wire easily solves the problem. Magneti Marelli generators: Secure the 6 mm ring terminal under the top nut at the rear of the generator. Secure the 8 mm ring terminal at the frame grounding point inside the U channel (where the cable splitter is attached). Bosch generators: Secure the 6 mm ring terminal under the 6 mm bolt located on the left side of the generator body. Secure the 8 mm ring terminal at the frame grounding point inside the U channel (where the cable splitter is attached). |

| SPOT-LIGHTS |
Spot light extensions Moto Guzzi never made a spot light. Instead, they provided bracketry and wiring to support spot lights (or other front lights), but left it up to the individual police departments to fit their own spot lights. This harness provides color-matched pigtail extensions to connect the spot lights of your choice to the Y splitter for the spot lights. Comes complete with butt crimps, heat shrink, and sheathing. |

Turn signals Insulated female bullet terminals are included for the rear turn signal pigtails. The Moto Guzzi workshop manuals clearly indicate the use of a yellow/black wire for the left turn signal circuit and a yellow wire for the right turn signal circuit. However, every civilian turn signal harness I've inspected has not used this color combination. Instead, the harness for the right handlebar switch uses a yellow wire with a gray spiral tracer for the left turn signal circuit and a white wire with a gray spiral tracer for the right turn signal circuit. Furthermore, the turn signal harness uses a yellow wire with a black spiral tracer for the left turn signal circuit and a white wire with a black spiral tracer for the right turn signal circuit. I have chosen to use a yellow wire with a black spiral tracer and a white wire with a black spiral tracer throughout both the right handlebar switch harness and the turn signal harnesses. |

Front turn signals Originally, the front turn signals had sufficiently long pigtails which precluded the need for a separate sub-harness. If your front turn signals still have those long pigtails, you are fortunate. | RELAY-HARNESS |
Relay solution for the starter and headlight No more excuses! Relays greatly improve the performance of the starter and headlight. Your starter will spin faster and your headlights will burn brighter when you use relays. Relays also drammatically extend the life of the starter button and headlight switch (especially the lovely and valuable original CEV switches). I wrestled long and hard to create a solid solution that is in line with what I believe Carcano and Todero would have designed. A few points I'll mention:

Sub-harness to support the use of the K&S 12-0030 universal handlebar switch. Combines the functionality of the original left and right handlebar switches. Butt connectors and heat shrink are included to splice the sub-harness directly to the wires from the switch. Wires should be staggered to yield a smaller overall finished diameter. Several sizes of sheathing are also included for a finished appearance. Extra ground wire provided because the switch body does not provide the ground. Works with switch pictured below (not included). Many other universal switches would use a very similar wiring harness. I would be happy to create a custom harness for you. Please specify civilian or police handlebars. NOTE: Civilian applications refer to the civilian method of wiring turn signals (directly to the flasher). Police applications refer to the police method of wiring turn signals (through the toggle switch located on the dash). |

| DUAL-ELEMENT-FRONT-TURN-SIGNALS |
Sub-harness to support the use of two element front turn signals. A simple and elegant solution for splitting the power at the distribution block for dual element front turn signals. Typically the dim circuit is used as running lights and the bright circuit is used for the front turn signals. Using the provided wires and sheathing, extend the existing pigtail wires coming from the turn signals (for the running or parking lights), then join those two wires into the adapter inside the headlight shell. The yellow wire from the main harness will also plug into the adapter. Finally, the short yellow wire will plug into the distribution block. Includes butt crimps, heat shrink, and two sizes of sheathing for connecting to the front turn signals. |

| ALT-WIRING-HARNESS |
Alternator wiring harness Features the correct plug for the usual Nippondenso / Denso alternators and clones. Works with the alternator kits produced by Greg Field/Bob Nolan or Kevin Hahn of Scrambler Cycle. Note: This sub-harness is not needed if you are purchasing one of my main harnesses for an Alternator equipped machine. I've already included the plug and correct wiring with those main harnesses. Instead, this is a stand-alone harness to be used with a pre-existing main harness when adding an alternator.
Please specify your coil: Magneti Marelli or Bosch. Magneti Marelli coils accept 5 mm ring terminals. Bosch coils (and many modern aftermarket coils) accept female spade terminals. |

| FUSE-BOX |
Fuse box to replace the original unit This replacement fuse box mounts directly in the original location using the original size fasteners without any need for modification of the headlight whatsoever. This fuse block accepts up to six ATO/ATC style fuses. While it comes complete with a clear plastic dust cover with fastening nut, these will foul the headlight plug when used. The maximum load per fuse is 30 amp with a 90 amp limit for the entire block of six fuses. However, I strongly recommend using 15 amp fuses in each slot (fuses included). I modify each fuse box to join two sets of circuits. This is done to mimmick the linked terminals in the original fuse block and greatly reduces the wiring complexity otherwise needed. For civilian applications, the six total circuits are more than sufficient. The original fuse panel had nine fuse circuits. Four wires were plugged into the top and four wires were plugged into the bottom. This leaves two top and two bottom connections completely free for use. For police applications, the six total circuits and four linked circuits are just right. The original fuse panel had nine fuse circuits. Six wires were plugged into the top and five wires were plugged into the bottom. This leaves one bottom connections free for use. Physical fitment within the longer, V700 headlight bucket is no problem at all, as there is ample room between the headlight plug and the fuse block. Physical fitment within the shorter headlight bucket is quite close, but it does fit. When a sealed beam halogen bulb is used along with the original headlight plug, there is just enough room for the fuse block.
