We pulled the heads off the race bike last night, in order to install the freshly rebuilt Tonti heads. Despite my hopes of the cylinders being ok for another year, looks like today I will be looking for cylinder kits. At the beginning of the 2002 season the chrome had a lip at the top, but looked good along the stroke of the piston. Now the chrome at the top has worn down into the stroke pretty badly on both sides & on one cylinder there is a bubble that looks like it was not far from a big piece flaking off. Ring gaps are way over spec as well. Even with the problems, the bike was running quite well & not smoking at all. I need to replace the parts as cost effectively as posable, the pistons look ok but I have not measured them accurately yet. I might can get away with having the cylinders plated but I think that once I do that & buy rings, then I'm close to the cost of the complete kit. With the recent post of unobtainable piston cylinder kits, wish me luck in finding something on short notice. Ken Asheville, NC |
