Thanks to Bruce Giller for sending me this information in a private e-mail. In Bruce's own words:

Over the weekend I replaced the original Grote Industries running lights in my Wixom Ranger fairing with the double contact 53000 units. I wired it up to be both running lights and turn signals.

I did have to perform a bit of surgery on the base of the new units. The originals are round and the Ranger molding fits them perfectly, however the 53000 units have a rectangular base. I had to round off 2 or 3 of the corners to get them to fit into the round recess on the fairing. And the rear-ward facing (red) plastic lens needed to be altered as well; it has a raised wing at the base that had to be trimmed down so as not to hit the fairing. The new lenses do not have the same contour as the original so they don't fit flush with the rubber grommet in the fairing. But you only see the gap from the riders seat.

All in all, it took me only 45 minutes to do the replacement since I did have to attach/solder two Molex connectors on the ends of the wires as well. I used a metal cutoff disc in my right-angle grinder to do all the trim work. And the casting of the base is of a high quality - I didn't see any voids and the result was a smooth cut with the cutoff disc (I was using the side of the disc to do the work and not much with the edge).
