Take the generator to a starter/alternator shop...preferrably with an old
man that's done it all his life running it...he'll remember how to test and
work on generators. Most young guys don't work on generators, just
alternators.
Generators only charge spun in one direction...Guzzis spin clockwise if
you're facing the engine. BTW, a Bosch, VW type III (the late'60's thru
early '70's, station wagon looking one...also the fastback model too)
generator is the perfect replacement...puts out about 40 watts instead of
the 28 or so the Marelli and Bosch Guzzi units did and bolts right in. I
had to put a piece of ruber under the front of mine tho'. Brushes can be
gotten CHEAP at a VW mechanics shop.
Also, why spend $75-100 on a battery when a K-mart or Wal-Mart garden
tractor battery fits perfectly for less than $20? Just make sure the posts
are on the correct sides...take the old battery tocompare them.
Hope i've been helpful.
