Looks like I lucked out for I have the aluminum petcocks with the
locking ring; never knew that there were more than one type. But long
term use will determine if they'll work out or not - I'll report back in
every so often on them. I did keep the original gaskets just in case
the new ones don't work out as expected. I wonder what the original
gaskets were made out of? Viton would seem to be the material of choice
but maybe it can't standup to the abrasion.

Indeed, mine did not last too long. I installed them in the steel petcocks that
do not lock into position. I just bought a set of used aluminum petcocks (the
locking kind) from some guy on e-Bay. I like them a lot better than the steel
ones. I'll try and remember to take the old petcocks apart and see what
happened.

Cheers,

You might check with Dave Morgan. I have suggested this option to many
people, including him. He said that his held out about 6 months as I recall,
before they started leaking. I am aware of people, (Dave Jackson of
Junior's), that have made their own, who had varying results. Junior says
that the ones he made that were used with the petcocks that "clicked" into
place have all worked. The smooth slide type which are most prevelent, all
started to leak again after a time.
