I need some help, folks. My Ambo is running so bad
now that I cannot even ride it. This problem has been
developing gradually. It wasn't running very well on
the way to work t'other day, but on the way home it
got really bad. I couldn't make it all the way home -
it would loose power and backfire a lot, then regain
power for a few seconds, then loose power again. It
isn't that it won't fire at all: but it misfires a lot
and most fo the time when it does fire it doesn't
produce much power. I left it in a friend's garage
half way between work and home.
I have completely cleaned the carbs and fuel finters,
and replaced the choke o-rings. I put in new spark
plugs, a different (not new, but good) coil, new spark
plug wires, checked the timing and points (which are
clean), and looked for shorts in the obvious places. I
have not changed the condenser, because I am not sure
if a malfunctioning condenser would cause these
symptoms - it would just cause the points to burn, no?
How exactly does a condenser work?
I have the distributor at home now, thinking perhaps
the points aren't grounding do to the oil and dirt on
the plate that they attach to. Other then that and the
condenser, I can't think of anything else to check.
Any ideas?????

Mike and Loopers>On a long ride last year fron Harrisburg Pa home to
Cortlandt Manor my LAPD started to run rough. We were up in the
mountains, and the bike was running on 1 cylinder. Then it would smooth
out as I throttled back. After much fiddling I got off the interstate and
came the rest of the way home on secondary roads. The rough running
dissapeared and the rest of the ride was great. This year while visiting
friends in Lynchburg Va I took the LAPD down to Deals Gap to ride the
Dragon. We left Lynchburg early in the morning and set off to Roanoke to
pick up the Blue Ridge Parkway. The bike started to act up and I thought
"this is not a good way to start a 1000 mile trip".For about 20 miles on
RT 460 and then on the parkway it was running on 1 cylinder, then 2,then
1.Then it mysteriously cleared and no problems for the rest of the
trip.I have just come back from the Adirondack Rally and the whole way
up the bike acted up.On the way back the bike ran fine.I have had
enough,so today I pulled the petcocks.Inside each percock is a rubber
gasket with 2 or 3 holes in it.As you turn the petcock to on or reserve
the holes line up and gas is delivered to the hose leading to the
carb.On the right side I found the main passage clogged with the
remnants of the rubber gasket. It was allowing gas to pass but not
alot.On the left side it was even worse. No gas was coming thru, main or
reserve. If you are having a hard time turning your petcocks on or off or
to reserve,I would look here.I replaced the gaskets.Whalla-peanut butter
jelly sandwitch. This is yet another place to look for gas starvation
problems...................KO
