On the standard wiring diagram I'm looking at (in Premier Motor Corp.
700/750/850 manual, and I'm looking at the 850 as you don't say what model
your friend has).

Starter relay "K" is fed from the top of fuse 5, via the starter button.
What is odd is that fuses 3,4,5,6 & 7 are commoned at the top & fed from
the
ignition switch (pin 15-54) which is live in position 1 when it connects
15-54 to 30-30 which is fed from the battery. Wired in this way the
starter
circuit & the coil are not fused at all.

None of the diagrams I have show the starter wired to the keyswitch,
though
I know some bikes are wired in that way.
To operate on the key, one of the spare terminals on the ignition switch
needs to be wired directly to the starter relay to give a live on pin 86
when the key is turned hard right. The wire is probably not in the new
loom.
I suggest ringing out the ignition switch with a continuity tester to
establish which pin connects to 30-30 only when the key is turned all the
way to the right against the spring. It is tempting to say it is the spare
pin 50, but it may not be!

I was helping fellow loopframer James-Scott Wong with a starting
problem but his wiring harness was a mess. We decided to start fresh
and got a new harness from Cycle Garden. Everything seems
understandable except the starter circuit. James likes to start from
the key but I get lost as I follow the circuit from starter to relay to
fusebox. Can anyone shed light? I need to know specifically how the
wire from the relay (brown) gets power.

David
