Ian... if you're taking a poll... I vote for points and (especially) condensor,
before Rick does anything else.... but I'm just a hack... I'm sure one of the
experts will get it before long.

Rick,

We'll figure it out :-)

Are the valves ok? I doubt that would be the problem but I think you have
checked just about everything else.

I think your compression is ok.

By the way...I think I asked this already but can't remember if I got an
answer from you. Tell us when the popping occurs. I assume that the bike is
warmed up. How is it at idle? How is it at constant throttle 2000rpm? At
high rpm? When you blip the throttle is there hesitation? Does it rev up ok?
Does the popping occur all the time or intermittently?

I still think that the problem lies in the carb. If it is popping that means
that the problem is a lean mixture which means either too little fuel or too
much air (ie an air leak). This means that the jets are blocked, mixture
screw is set too lean. Any other thoughts?

Another thought I was thinking. Maybe there is intermittent firing going on.
Likely not the coil but maybe the the problem is in the distributor? How
about the condensor?

We should take bet. Whomever is right is owed a beer by Rick :-) I guess the
problem is that you have to go to Biloxi to collect :-)

Regards....Ian
