Hi Brian

If you look at the toothy end of the pinion you will see a three digit
number. The ring gears are also numbered around the bolt holes somewhere.
These numbers are to match the two gears once they leave the machinists
hands as they are ground as a pair and should stay together in service.
More than likely a mismatched pair, even if set up correctly, would not
last. I wish it were easier than that but the rear drive gears in the
guzzis are pretty picky about their playmates.

 To any and all,
As some of you may know, I have been loofing for an Ambassador rear
drive, with the 8/35 final drive ratio. I recently bought what I thought
was a matched set, but when the package was delivered, what I got was
two 37-tooth ring gears (with pretty badly scored teeth), one 35-tooth
ring gear which looked almost unused, and a moderately scored 8-tooth
pinion gear. My problem is that I don't know if the pinion gear was used
on one of the 37-tooth ring gears (I suspect this is the case, as it
shows almost the same wear) or on the 35-tooth ring gear. So, my
question is this: can I use the 8-tooth pinion gear from an 8/37 gear
set along with my 35-tooth ring gear, even though it is (most likely)
not a matched set. I suspect that the answer is 'NO", but wanted to
check first.
Thanks in advance,
Brian
