I consider myself to be one of those buyers of a barnyard special.
Picked my 71 police Ambo up for $1300, I'm the 2nd titled owner with 2
non-titlers in between, 5100 original miles, verified by the original
owner whom I searched out and called (his name/address was on the
original title and he still lived at the same residence!). Found it a
few towns south of me in the backyard of a house in a real boony type of
area. A note though on barnyard specials, while the acquisition cost is
low, plan on spending as much or more getting the bike all cleaned up.
I will probably have $3000-$3200 total investment into her when I'm
finished, well worth it though to bring a 31 year old original back to
life! When searching for a bike, get that mental calculator working in
your head as your checking out the machine, purchase price + what it
will need, i.e., tires, chrome part replacements/re-chroming, tune-up,
speedo refurb, clutch plates, etc.. Choice is either splurge up front
for one that has had all of the refurb work done or get one cheap and
spend that money yourself to get it to that point. I wouldn't trade the
experience of the refurb process though as it was very educational and
provided a real sense of ownership and pride of the accomplishment
(cosmetics on my part, Guzzi shop for the mechanics).

 Todd,

You said it right.....there is no mistake in buying a Guzzi...especially
a
Loopframe....just that some prices are better than others :-)

I was lucky.....I got in 4-5 years ago and I picked up a couple of nice
bikes for relatively cheap (to today's prices). However, I have had to
go
through the teething process. I have paid too much for parts and have
had
questionable service done. But it was all worth it......the price to pay
for
the pleasure I suppose.

The other day I was at the Montreal Auto Show and there was a $5 million
dollar Bugatti. Funny but I had this vision of my bike sitting behind a
rope
one day with a security guard watching over her :-) Maybe it won't be as
valuable but certianly as beautiful :-)

 Ian,

Peter makes a good point though......with a newbie
(read: moron) like myself, there is a price of
admission to the Loopframe world which
I am glad to pay. I have thought about Moto
Guzzi's for 30 years and never acted on getting
one. Why? I haven't figured it out yet. But, on
the verge of my 50th B-Day, I finally decided
to quit thinking about it and just do it. Maybe
because my time is limited and these (loopframes)
have always had a hold on me. If I get screwed
on this deal, well so be it. But from all aspects
so far, this seems to be the right decision.
Hell, has anyone made a bad decision buying
a Loopframe....HA! I don't think so......

Todd
