Tim (and all)-
During rechroming, the old chrome is electro-chemically removed. Then the
base metal is welded, smoothed and polished (depending on what it needs)
before the new chrome is put on. On a motorcycle I would not use any less
that triple chroming (three step). Lasts longer, looks better, and lasts
longer. Single step chroming is okay for interior car parts that will never
be touched or weathered, but they will probably not last a year on a bike.
Of course quality varies from shop to shop...there's probably someone out
there who's single plated chrome is better than someone else's triple plated
chrome. Also, chroming CAN be more than a new replacement part, but shop
around...it CAN be cheaper to rechrome. Then (if it was true to begin with)
you can legitimately say that you have the original parts (albeit rechromed,
but still the original part.).

Can for instance, a front crash bar that is pitted, be too bad to have
re-chromed, or during the process is all the old chrome taken off? Also,
in
looking to have parts re-chromed, are there differences in the process from
one place to another that would result in better finishes? I have briefly
heard of two and three step processes, but not sure of the real difference.

Tim
