Oh boy, I sure hope I didn't start something here as my wife says I
am always trying to 'reinvent the wheel'. Obviously 90 weight gear oil wont
do but I think you could use any solvent type liquid to get a rough
estimate. You want good tolerances but they are not race bikes (don't quote
me on that one ;-))

Your leak down test sounds great. Can you use any kind of spray or
do you
have to use carb cleaner? Can you use any liquid like gasoline;
just drip
it on there and see if it seeps through? Just wondering because I
just
lapped my valves and I really don't know if the tolerances are close
enough.
