Peter, As in all rubber parts on older bikes, they deteriorate over
time. When I pulled one of the caps off of mine the O-ring fell apart it was
so brittle and almost deposited many parts down the fork tubes. As far as
the drain plug gaskets go, just anal I guess, as both of mine were torn
after I removed the screws but had not been leaking. So I was at the dealer
anyway and since they were not leaking with the gasket before I took them
out why change to something else? YMMV

just wondering , why the recommendation for the O ring replacement?
I
wouldn't think the oil would get that far up the tubes.
Also, my drain plug gaskets were torn, I used RTV gasket sealer,
put a
small bead around base of head. Seems to work fine.
