Hi Richard,
V700s and early Ambos aren't exactly powerhouses especially if you've
gotten used to riding anything more modern. The gear whine is a
characteristic of the four-speed transmission and is nothing to worry
about. I like the sound of the old four-speed and the barely audible cam
gears whirring merrily along. I also like a little valve noise - but not
too much. :-) I set my valves on the "base" of the cam lobe - that is
the point on the cam opposite maximum lift. Turn the engine until the
valve you are adjusting is fully open, then turn the crankshaft one
complete turn. The lifter will then be on the base of the cam lobe and
the valve ready for adjusting. Works for me, hope it helps for you. How
many miles on the bike? It could be worn rockers or lifters if it's high
mileage. Later,

Charlie

Hi all, I finally got my 67 V700 registered yesterday, driving to the
court house was the first long trip on the bike if you can call 10
miles round trip long.Any way the bike seems to make a lot of
lifter/rocker noise. How much is too much, I rechecked the valve lash
today and it is at .1 mm in and .203 mm outwhich is what the book
calls for. The bike doesn't seem to have a whole lotta power either,
although I was in traffic I did get up to 50 mph. Boy do you get a
lotta looks riding a loop frame. I still have a ways to go to finish
it but at least I am riding it, I want to do a longer trip tommorrow
maybe if it isn't raining. One other thing I noticed is a slight
whinning sound from the tranny is that normal, seemed louder at 45 or
50. Thanks for all the advice from everyone, Rick67 V700 Fl
