Patrick,

OK Everyone, stop the thread on "those pesky little o-rings". Patrick Hayes
has the answer. Thanks Patrick you have solved this conundrum.

By God, I never would have looked on the bottom of the cylinders for those
chamferings. As soon as I got your e-mail I ran out to the shed, pulled the
cylinders up and felt the little chamfers at the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock
stud holes, right at the bottom of the cylinders. This explains why Italy
shipped 12 o-rings. Great Patrick, thanks again! (Is there reference to
this in any Guzzi manual??)

Now tell me this; why do we want to stop oil blow by with these little
o-rings when we want oil to get up on the rockers anyway?? What does it
matter how the oil gets up there?? I know we want oil into the rockers
themselves but it is pretty much an oil bath up in the heads isn't it??

One more thing. The big sized bolt that screws in at the 12 o'clock
position on the head; this has an o-ring around its shank. Should this
o-ring be replaced also??

Very best, Bob Hawkes

Yes they do, or should. This chamfering would be on the bottom side of
the
cylinder, not in the head. All six studs must get 'sealed' or oil will
blow
through. The outer, four studs are sealed at the rocker arm carriers.
Those
o-rings go between the cylinder head and the rocker carriers. However the
top center and bottom centert cylinder studs are sealed way down at the
bottom between the cylinder and the engine casing. First, install the
base
gasket onto the studs and the engine casing. Next, install an o-ring on
the
upper and lower center studs so this o-ring gets pinched between the base
gasket and the base of the cylinder. Turn your cylinders upside down and
you
 will see the chamfering.
