The one I got is fine, and designed to work specifically with my Eldo.
I'm not sure why you want to cobble something up, when the original works
so well...
As far as parts for old bikes, I guess all the parts could dry up in the
future, and pistons may have to be custom made, but since new ones are
still available, why not use them?
