Hi Bruce
I almost wore mine out getting it set right. Now I have the surprise of
finding it doesn't work again. I suspect the position moved. I have to do
some more investigation.
Anyway, maybe this can help.
the plastic housing seems snug to remove, it feels to me like hydraulic
action, like the oil seals off all openings and pulls a vacuum and prevents
air from getting in behind to break the hold on it. For me if I just remove
the 2 bolts and spin the housing maybe 30-50 degrees it breaks free enough
to pull it out. If I remember correctly, I made a jam nut on the center
terminal and pulled on that.

the bent copper contact should be in the "drooping down" position. Like the
end curls downward.
Look inside the hole with a flashlight and actuate the gears. At neutral
you can see a button pop down from the top side. It retracts when in gear.
This is the guy you want to touch with the copper finger. It has to be in
far enough but not too far. Also the angle cant be off too far or you'll
contact something when the button is up. Mark from MG Classics had a good
idea, if you can mark the threaded rod attaching to the finger, you can
tell if you have spun it unintentionally while tightening.
I made a slight file mark on the end of the rod being careful not to damage
the thread. I used a vertical line when the finger was pointing down.

Then the trick is to get the depth set correctly. I work with the ignition
on and watch the yellow indicator as a clue if I am right or wrong.

Now I suspect I loosened up the fit of the finger to the housing and it
moved on me after I set it.
I may have to add some JB weld

Good luck
Pete

Should it be an ordeal to remove the plastic Neutral switch housing
from the block? I have to use ViseGrips to remove mine and every time I
do, it gets a bit chewed up. I removed/installed it many a time in a
vain attempt to get my neutral switch to be accurate, and to stop a
weeping oil leak (successful with a new homemade gasket).
