Hi Brian and all,
I totally agree about M.A.W. Though my luck has been somewhat better with them,
the service is always slow - usually at least 10 days. I just use them each time
this topic comes up as an example of how cheaply the Contis can be obtained.
Shipping costs vary pretty widely among the mailorder companies as well - be
sure to ask. Sorry, you had such an ordeal. Thanks for the story! Cheers,

Charlie

Charlie,
The last time this topic came up, as a result of your posting about
Continental tires and M.A.W., I ordered them, mainly because I had used
Continentals before, and because of price. I thought you might be amused
at my experience with M.A.W., however.
About a week after I ordered the tires, a customer service rep.
called me to say that my tires had been shipped to another customer, and
that he had refused the UPS shipment. I was told to refuse shipment when
I received his tires, and that that my Contis would be shipped as soon
as they got them back. I did receive his tires, which had strange scoops
on them for riding in sand, and refused shipment.
About a week after that, when I was expecing the Conti's, another
rep. called me to ask why I had refused to accept the sand tires I
ordered. I explained the situation, and was assured that I would get my
tires soon. A week later I was again contacted and was asked why I had
cancelled my order. I explained again what had happened and told them
that all I wanted was the pair of Conti tires that I had ordered. I
again was assured that I would get them soon. The next day I was called
and asked what it was that I had ordered. I told them that I wanted my
Conti tires, and was told that they were shipped 3 weeks ago. I
explained that that was correct, but that they were shipped to the wrong
party, who refused to accept them. I asked again if they could please
send me the tires I had ordered. A week later I still had not received
them, and so I called M.A.W. to inquire. I was told that they could not
be shipped to me until M.A.W. had received them back from the party to
whom they were sent. I told them that they were sure to have received
them since the other party had refused to accept them from UPS over 4
weeks ago. I also explained that their shipment to the wrong party was
not my problem. All I wanted was the tires I had ordered and had been
charged for.
A week later, about 5 weeks after I had placed the order, and after
about 5 telephone conversations, I received them.
The moral of this story is that if you need something in a hurry, I
would not recommend M.A.W.

 Hi Ian,
My recommendation is the Continental Blitz - TKH23 110/90-18 front and
TKH24
120/90-18 rear. Or you can substitute a Conti-Tour TK17 rear for several
bucks
more. Either combination is very good - excellent traction wet or dry,
good
handling characteristics, and long wearing as well. Priced right too -
M.A.W.
has the 23/24 for $52 front and $59 rear at present.

I also notice Bridgestone has the S-11 in the same sizes for $50 front
and $60
rear. I've never used these, so can't comment on
traction/handling/durability.

With the 120 rear you may have to move the brake anchor to the other
side of
it's mounting bracket for clearance.

Cheers, Charlie

Hi Folks,

I know that we just went through this not too long ago....sorry about
the
redundant questions.

Ok.....I am looking for new tires for my bike. I put Metzeler (sp?) ME
77's
on my 70 Ambo and I like them alot. What I did...which was posted
previoulsy
was to put the tire on the front and reverse the direction of rotation.
Seems to have worked so far after 400 miles.

Well...I need a new set for my 69 Ambo now and the shop that gives me
the
best prices say that they can't get Metzelers that I want. I wanted to
see
if there was any recommendations as to which brand to get. Some people
mentioned the Dunlop K177's. When I asked about that tire I was told
that it
is only a front tire. Is it ok to put a front tire on the back? If I did
do
that which way would I have the direction of rotation going? What is
the
comparable tire that is designed for the back? In some ways I would like
to
keep the same tires on the front and back and I would like to hear what
other brands you Loopers are running on.

Any thoughts would be appreciated although I think that I will have to
take
a trip to the shop and look through the book to decide which I will
want.

Thanks to all in advance......Regards...Ian
