RE.Bike Lift.
Hi, everyone. Had to reply to this as I feel some
of the recommendations in the replies about bike
lifts, are in themselves, possibly dangerous. Grade 8
bolts are certainly harder than grade 5, or lesser,
and have a greater tensile strength, but I have always
been led to believe that grade 5 bolts possess a
higher shear strength than grade 8. It seems to me
that the failed bolts described, would be in shear,
rather than tension. If these bolts form the pivot in
a scissor arm arrangement, it is also important to
keep the arms as close together as possible, to reduce
the twisting of the bolt in the pivot hole. This
increases the shear factor substantially, if the bolt
is allowed to twist. Use loctite and double locknuts
on them if this is the case. These thoughts come
from 20+ years in the spanner game, but I am the first
to say check with an engineer, if in doubt. Regards, Eddie.
