Keith,
Glad to hear you are on the road again.
I am going through a learning curve with my 71 so I can empathize. I dont
have experience with the pinging or missing with mine but it is most likely
timing that is too advanced. Maybe both are related. I have an
occasional miss but its not repetitive. Its more like the "sneeze" that
Ian described. I got it once under load and a few times at idle. One "pop"
and then business as usual.
For the electrical trouble shooting, I suggest buying a simple
voltmeter/ohmmeter. This will help you trace circuits and if there is
voltage where its supposed to be before powering up. I could not have done
the trouble shooting without it.
I am curious also as to the speed question. My speedo needle does not hold
steady, but sways back and forth. At 3500 rpm,
the indicated speed is swinging between 55 and 65. Seems to have plenty
power left. I am still babying it, also I am just getting used to an
unfaired bike at highways speeds.
Good Luck
Pete

Finally got my bike back after 9 months at the shop (work/winter
storage). Bike ran great, much better than when I brought it in for
service. Only thing I noticed was that she would knock/ping at around
60-70 when accelerating or when under load. Then also noticed during
the 2nd ride that under hard acceleration, there seemed to be a miss,
full power, then as if the spark was cut out or fuel was cut out, then
back, then off, then back. Can this be plug related? I'm going to
change out the plugs anyways and give it a try. Also have some fun
electric stuff to work on, i.e., blinkers/flashers work when they want
(think this has to do with the rear blinkers I installed), left blinker
indicator on dash is out (probably bulb as mechanic said it was working
a few days before I picked it up - he gave me a new bulb).

BTW, what type of speed are 4 speed stock Ambo's running? She seems to
scream on the highway at 70 mph in 4th gear, though she keeps pulling.
