Loopers:

While on a visit to Don Drake, Ducati, Guzzi tuner par excellance (Domi-Racer),
I mentioned that I'd like to pull a trailer with my Eldo but feared the brakes
weren't up to the task, he said pull the shoes and send them to Vintage Brake in
Cal for a reline. Makes all the difference in the world he says but mentioned
that they might want your hub to machine the inside of it so the shoes fit
properly.

Usual disclaimers apply but what Don Drake doesn't know about vintage bikes,
ain't worth knowing.

Ian, for what its worth, I adjust mine the same way ( just not touching )
and the brakes are, well they slow you down but its not like a disc for
sure.
Last week I put mine thru for state inspection and by law they must road
test the bike. I asked the inspector what he thought of the brakes. Said
pretty much on par for BMW drum models of the 50s and 60s. He didn't give
me any indication the braking performance was way out of line.
Of course he is not familiar with loops and this still does not answer the
question, if your brakes (or mine) are operating normally.

I did see in the Tips booklet a suggestion to machine down the brake
actuating cam to make it more of a wedging action ( the vice grip principle)
rather than relying totally on the cable tension. Suggested removal was
3/8 inch

I discussed this with Mark at MG Classics, he was not in favor of this.

It still makes sense to me and I am still going to try it on a back up set
of cams just in case I want to go back to the original design.
Anyone else have any experience with this??
Pete

Hi All,

I have a question relating to the front brake on my 69 and 70 Ambos.

Both brakes are solid with good drums and lots of pad (4mm out of 5mm).

My problem is that when I adjust the brake so that the pad is just about
to
touch the drum in free wheel (brake off) then I don't have enough lever
pull
to get the brakes to fully grab. What I mean by that is that when I
squeeze
the lever I get to the end (hits the handlebar) before I get maximum
braking.

I was practicing this yesterday. At 20-30mph I was pulling the front brake
to max. I just can't get the braking performance I want. It's kind of like
a
1960's antilock braking system :-)

Any suggestions as to what I can do to get the cable/lever tightened up so
I
can get all the pull I want? Anyone else experience this? I guess I could
always tighten up the cable play but that would mean the drums would be
rubbing on the pads during free wheel.

Thanks....Ian
