I guess I will chime in on the subject. My Ambassador has its own
starting demons and what I found is that after cleaning and checking all of
the wiring and connections, taking the starter/selenoid out and giving it a
good spray down with contact cleaner and making sure my battery is
completely charged that it sometimes depends on how I am pushing the starter
button. If I casually hit it then the starter struggles, but if I firmly
press it in the middle it usually starts up with the vigor it should. I have
another switch that I keep meaning to swap and try but have not gotten
around to it. I also am contemplating wiring it up to the switch but wonder
how much trouble it is to take hands off of the throttle or clutch to turn
the key if the bike happens to stalls in traffic. Anyone run like this and
have opinions?
Thanks,
Rich

Ian,

I am thinking the same way as you since it seems to be an
intermittent
problem. Guess it depends on where the piston stops when it is
shutdown
because it definitely seems to stop turning when the piston is neat
TDC.
The smoke I get is the contact wire heating up if it locks up for
too
long. Thought putting a larger battery with more cca's would solve
this, but it hasn't. Didn't notice any smoke last time as I think
this
new battery didn't have as long a delay turning the engine past TDC
versus the old battery, so maybe I am OK. Seems like lots of folks
have
the same problem, so I'm not sure if it's worth getting a new or
rebuilt
starter, especially since yours was just rebuilt and is doing the
same
thing mine and others loops are doing. FYI, just picked up a
Magnetti
Marelli coil, my OEM is leaking a bit, so it's almost time to change
it
out.

See Ya,
