Rich,
If you want an authentic challenge, try operating an antique motorcycle
(loopframe) on a hot day, in traffic with a key start. I've done this with
my 69 Ambo., who's problems are, by now, legendary. Stay with your button
start if you can! Best, Bob Hawkes

I guess I will chime in on the subject. My Ambassador has its own
starting demons and what I found is that after cleaning and checking all
of
the wiring and connections, taking the starter/selenoid out and giving it
a
good spray down with contact cleaner and making sure my battery is
completely charged that it sometimes depends on how I am pushing the
starter
button. If I casually hit it then the starter struggles, but if I firmly
press it in the middle it usually starts up with the vigor it should. I
have
another switch that I keep meaning to swap and try but have not gotten
around to it. I also am contemplating wiring it up to the switch but
wonder
how much trouble it is to take hands off of the throttle or clutch to turn
the key if the bike happens to stalls in traffic. Anyone run like this and
have opinions?
Thanks,
Rich

Ian,

I am thinking the same way as you since it seems to be an
intermittent
problem. Guess it depends on where the piston stops when it is
shutdown
because it definitely seems to stop turning when the piston is neat
TDC.
The smoke I get is the contact wire heating up if it locks up for
too
long. Thought putting a larger battery with more cca's would solve
this, but it hasn't. Didn't notice any smoke last time as I think
this
new battery didn't have as long a delay turning the engine past TDC
versus the old battery, so maybe I am OK. Seems like lots of folks
have
the same problem, so I'm not sure if it's worth getting a new or
rebuilt
starter, especially since yours was just rebuilt and is doing the
same
thing mine and others loops are doing. FYI, just picked up a
Magnetti
Marelli coil, my OEM is leaking a bit, so it's almost time to change
it
out.

See Ya,

Interesting Keith....especially with you having the larger

What I am thinking is that the engine stops at near TDC where the
compression is max. More work required to get it over the top but
once
 it
does there there is some inertia built up and the battery can
handle the
rotation through the next compression cycle.

Another thought.....maybe the starter solenoid needs to be
excited? I am
 no
expert but sometimes when the engine stops rotating and I am still

 holding
the starter button I can hear a little high pitched sound. I
wonder what
 that is?

Regards....Ian

Hey Ian,

I would love to know the answer to this one as I have the EXACT
SAME

PROBLEM! Just what is causing this hangup?? I just installed
that

bigger battery to get more cca's, but it still has that
hesitation like

yours. Only exception is that my starter will smoke if I hold
the

starter button down too long if it is hanging up! Mechanic
figured it

was just not enough juice coming from the old 28 cca battery I
had, but

the 500cca battery does the same, though the hesitation isn't as
long.

Keep me posted on this one!

Thanx!
