The nickasil is the shit. I run it in my beemer. 50k miles and they still
look new when I pulled it apart to get the heads rebuilt. The Ambo I just
put together that RUNS (yahoo!) and only needs tires (waiting) has a case of
the flakes. This winter I'm gonna do the nickasil treatment. I do know there
is a couple places that will do existing cylinders with nickasil, but by the
time you get the process done and buy new pistons, you probably run an even
higher cost than buying the set from a shop.

As to the wiring, these bikes are dead nuts simple. Took me a day or so to
do the wiring and I got it right the first time and I'm no engineer. I also
had no existing loom to work from, just the diagram. If you go to
allelectric.com (allelectronic.com? I forget) your can get a bag of bullet
connectors (1 each male and female, 50 peices each) for like 5 or 10 bucks.
and then the 29 buck all in one JCwhitney connector kit will fill out most
of the rest. Probably you'd need a small bag of each of female and male
spades as well. round it out with some solder, liquid electrical tape and
something to wrap your wiring in (NOT ELECTRICAL TAPE) to make it pretty.
use the liquid tape to seal the connectors from growing kaka.

As for switches...since I managed to wreck the last existing original switch
in the world and a repro is just a bit out of my range (someday but not now)
I dug up an old japanese unit from a bike junk yard. cost me like 5 bucks.
it has a nice aluminum housing. I cleaned it up real good with electrical
contact cleaner. then I set to figuring out how I'd use it. I don't have
turn signals but I do have fog lights. So once I figured out how the
switches were wired, I used the turn signal switch for the headlights.
Center is off, left is low and right is high beam (most controls I found did
not have an off position for the headlight I like the option to turn it off)
then I used the hi-lo switch, hooked to a relay to run the fog lights. Hi is
on, lo is off. No dash buttons or switches cobbled in there, just a flick of
my thumb. And the horn button is of course for the dual 133 decibel road
blasters. I haven hooked up a start button yet (I'm using the key) but that
is just a matter of figuring out where to put another relay.

It might cost less than buying a new loom. I don't know. I know I take great
pride in that I did it all my self. And if you don't use a stock set of
switch gear, you may well have to modify your new loom to make it work.
Maybe you can ask a shop about a package deal.

I might caution agains a used loom because of a) previousowneritis. meaning
yards of gooey old electrical tape. Bizarre mods. lamp cord. b) the
insulation is probably gonnna be stiff and prone to cracking. That just begs
for shorts and ground faults.

John>the chrome in the oil is a known thing. You can go on like this for a
long
time BUT-you say your never going to sell.So why not do the right thing and
get
a set of nikasil jugs and pistons and slap them on the old girl. You'd be
doing
the right thing for her-and for you.As for the wiring-you can get new looms
from Mark at Guzzirenew or from MO at CycleGarden. Its not a job I have
attempted yet..........KO

Ian, what's your opinion on replacing the wiring on a stock loopframe?
That is, go with the original-type fuses and connections in the stock
location, or upgrade to newer blade-type fuses, maybe in the headlight
shell, maybe elsewhere?

For that matter, I'm starting to pick up flakes of chrome in my oil,
do you recommend cast-iron or nickasil cylinders? OE switchgear
or Japanese switches?

Actually I spoze it's my call, since I don't ever plan to sell this
baby...
