John-
I'd repaint the tank without rechroming (thats what I did on my bike
anyway). Personally I think the chrome panels are definitive of the
loopframes too and I feel it totally ruins the look to have a solid painted
tank. When we met, I didn't think your chrome looked bad.
The reason for the chrome panels is (drum roll.....) so you don't wear off
the paint with your knees! My guess is that Guzzi didn't like the look of
tank panels (which do the same function), so they took the short-n-easy way
around...chrome the whole tank and only polish what ya want to see...paint
the rest. At least back then (and there) it was short-n-easy...no EPA type
regulations.
Of course it's always free to leave it be...
Ride by the store again, If it's nice, I'll probably have myEldo there.
Cheers!

<DIV>Fellow loopers, (kinda sounds like a disease)</DIV>
<DIV>I have decided that my 28 year old, 149,000 mile eldo is going to need a good clean up. I would really like to repaint it and re-chrome the tank panels but I know that it will be an impossibility from a affordability standpoint. To me the chrome tank panels are one of the most defining features on a loopframe, but the prices that I have been quoted are waaaaaaaay out of my price range so I must decide to paint the tank and fenders a solid color or leave them as is, which is a bit repugnant after seeing some beautifully restored loopframe bikes. My questions are, what are the purposes, other than looks, for the chromed tank panels? And, should one paint the tank a solid color or not, and if not, then why? The last option is, should I leave it be and allow it's weathered look to be considered character?</DIV>
