SPeaking of which....when I went to replace the front main seal on the Ambo,
I sicovered that what I thought was oily dirt on my valve covers was
actually bits of the BRAND NEW belt I had put on. Seems the generator had
slipped backward causing the belt to rub on the case. Yech what a mess.

Other news:
I yanked the tranny out this weekend. Yes indeed it does come out without
removing the motor. The back end of the motor did have to be jacked up about
an inch or two and it came out on the left rather than the expected right
hand side.

Seems the input shaft seal is leaking as well. yech. And it seems there is a
special tool for getting the layshaft keeper nut off. I trid a couple home
remedies, including getting a set of hook wrenches at the harbor freight
shop. WHile that was a bust, the small hook wrench will make a spectacular
exhaust nut wrench. BUt that's not the problem. Looks like I might have to
find a peice of pipe and cut it to fit.

I also removed the clutch. yech. another mess. all the plates were gooed
with a crust of what appears to be dried oil and dirt. The friction disks
are less than manual spec by half a milimeter. damn. and I neglected to buy
flywheel bolts. double damn.

BUt I did replace the rear main seal. this is an updated one that matches
the specs on the front main seal so I can use synthetic oil if I choose. The
seal went in okay witht he use of the seating tool. but is doesn't have the
deep V like the old one did against the crankshaft. I'm worried that the
inner lip didn't seat in properly. I don;t want to push anything down in
there to try to seat is properly as I will mess up the seal for sure. Guess
I'll get another to have in the toolbox just in case I have to re-do the
whole process.

Any one know what size belt to use on a 73 Eldo. Mine broke and got all
chewed up. The manual tells you everything but what size belt to use.
Anyone know?
THanks, Vince in NY
