That plug is the transmission vent. It worked far better on the 4speed than
on the 5speed. Under the plug is a spring. Under the spring is a plunger
with a rounded end. Under the plunger is the shift drum with holes or
recesses on its surface at critical points. When you turn the drum by
shifting, the spring-loaded plunger snaps into each of the recess holes and
properly locates the drum at each gear shift position.
