<P>I once had very similar symptoms several years ago and a friend of mine helped me replace several things that one of which must have been the solution. I replaced the spark plugs, spark plug cables, distributor cap, and used NGK spark plug caps while doing away with the stock ones. We also cleaned the points and adjusted the timing and she ran good as new. I found that some of the old "origional" parts had worn out there usefullness and things like theNGK caps and plugs helped and I also replaced the oil breather box and switched the airbox filter with K&N's. These were not expensive parts so I did them all at once but it worked.</P>

<DIV></DIV>>>
<DIV></DIV>>>Hi,
<DIV></DIV>>>First let me introduce myself... my name is Barry and I live in
<DIV></DIV>>>Bellingham,
<DIV></DIV>>>WA. and ride a 1973 Eldorado (civilian model). Have been lurking
<DIV></DIV>>>for a
<DIV></DIV>>>while... gleaning info.
<DIV></DIV>>>I have a couple of questions/problems and hope that some of you may
<DIV></DIV>>>have
<DIV></DIV>>>answers or suggestions.
<DIV></DIV>>>My bike will randomly have a miss or backfire problem at RPM's over
<DIV></DIV>>>4000.
<DIV></DIV>>>The scenario is as follows: The engine will roll right up to
<DIV></DIV>>>4000RPM just
<DIV></DIV>>>as strong as can be but when reaching this point, it acts sort of
<DIV></DIV>>>like a
<DIV></DIV>>>boat engine that has "loaded-up" after idling and trolling for an
<DIV></DIV>>>hour. It
<DIV></DIV>>>really sounds and feels like there is too much fuel and not enough
<DIV></DIV>>>spark
<DIV></DIV>>>the
<DIV></DIV>>>engine hesitates and grumbles and backfires. This doesn't happen
<DIV></DIV>>>on every
<DIV></DIV>>>ride, but when it does, it is consistent. Other days, I can take
<DIV></DIV>>>the bike
<DIV></DIV>>>out and it runs right up to 5500-6000RPM smoothly and decelerates
<DIV></DIV>>>without
<DIV></DIV>>>backfire.
<DIV></DIV>>>I have replaced the cap and rotor (rotor was cracked) and the plug
<DIV></DIV>>>caps and
<DIV></DIV>>>wires. I haven't replaced the condenser yet... because I thought a
<DIV></DIV>>>weak
<DIV></DIV>>>condenser should be consistently weak. It ran fine for weeks with
<DIV></DIV>>>no sign
<DIV></DIV>>>of this problem and then the problem re-appeared last week. The
<DIV></DIV>>>only
<DIV></DIV>>>common
<DIV></DIV>>>thing I can deduce is that the problem occurs when the engine oil
<DIV></DIV>>>is filled
<DIV></DIV>>>up to the top mark on the stick (I measure it by dipping it back in
<DIV></DIV>>>rather
<DIV></DIV>>>than screwing in and then unscrewing). A local Guzzi mechanic
<DIV></DIV>>>laughed when
<DIV></DIV>>>I suggested this as the culprit. However, I changed the oil
<DIV></DIV>>>yesterday and
<DIV></DIV>>>filled it back up to about an eight of an inch below high mark and
<DIV></DIV>>>the bike
<DIV></DIV>>>runs fine!!??!
<DIV></DIV>>>Any ideas?
<DIV></DIV>>>Thanks,
<DIV></DIV>>>Barry Dikeman
