I should have won the T-shirt for I was thinking of the answer, idle
jet, before David posted the question....

Actually, this happened to me a few years back. Took the Eldo out for
it's yearly WakeUp Ride with the same symptoms. Dropped the right carb
bowl and found a dirty white filament lodged inside the idle jet. I use
the cheapo $1 plastic fuel filters (one for each carb). Never had a
problem with them before.

But I did put one of them too close to the head on my '76 CB750F. The
bike would run ok on side streets but only for about 5 miles on the
Beltway (55-65 mph) where the engine would loose power until it died.
Stop for a bit to let the carbs fill back up and then ride for another 5
miles and repeat the process. The plastic filter had softened enough to
elongate the ends (and put a slight bend in it) thusly narrowing the
openings and reducing fuel flow. Subsequently relocated the replacement
filter out of heats' danger.

points set correct.


bike has been running great

started hestating at low and mid range, idleing rough, but when at
cruising
speed and accelerating would run great. would cruise all day and never
miss
a beat at 70 mph


what was wrong? EXACTLY?
