Sorry man, but if you wanna have polished brightwork, you have to work for
it. That's why I like polished aluminum, brass, etc better than chrome. I
appreciate the work that goes into making it glow.

I did a quick and dirty job with a bench wheel and some rouges. I wanted
mostly to get the scale and stuff off, but I kinda kept going. Fortunately
my dremel died before I could get into the nooks and crannies. Otherwise,
I'd still be polishing and not riding.

'nuff lecture.

I used one rag wheel and 2 kinds of rouge. black and white. the black cuts
the oxidisation and the white shines it up. The valve covers have a lot of
crannies that make it necessary to do a lot by hand. the front cover and
single guage dash are a lot easier.

cautions:
wear eye protection and gloves. you ever doubt this, let me know and I'll
send you my safety glasses with chip in the lens from a wire wheel.

if you've never done it before, practice on a golf club or whatever.
aluminum is soft. and the wheel spins fast. it would suck to get mail
seeking a new part because the wheel pitched it across the shop and busted
it on a wall.

the wheel generates a lot of heat (friction, my boy) so keep the part
moving.

the wheel can easily grab the part and slam it into your nuts, the wall or
your face with little warning and faster than you can think about. So always
pay attention to the direction that the wheel is spinning and how will it
try to push or pull the part.

Don't be tempted to use anything harsher than the rag wheel on thin aluminum
like those covers or dash. wire wheels, scotch wheels etc are right out. Oh
sure some can make cool patterns with that but that's not what we are after,
no?


with all that stuff out of the way, it is a good morale booster. countless
times I was bummed cause I was low on dough, parts were in transit or
another portion the bike wasn't coming together well. I'd go clean something
up.

The main problem is that once you do polish the part up...you keep going
back to do it again because it gets dirty. So just don't do it.

Thats a coincidence
I cleaned the bike today. But I cant say I noticed a different color
between the eng and trans.
Maybe you can help. I used Eagle 1 Mag cleaner. cleans the eng and
trans
and wheel rims fine. the valve covers and timing covers etc clean up some
but they stay very dull.
I know I can polish them up with Mothers mag cleaner, but is there a easier
way>?
