Tom,
I appreciate your detailing the differences in o-rings. Such an esoteric
subject! But what are you referring to with "durometer"? Just curious.
Thanks, Bob

Robert,

My observation is that the durometer of the neoprene rings is usually a
bit lower than that of the BUNA, which makes them slighlty softer. The
neoprene usually appears to be a shade darker than the BUNA, but this is
not a reliable indicator. My guess is that the average person would have
a very hard time telling them apart. The reason that you find the
neoprene variety in the hardware store is because it is suitable for use
in potable water systems.

 Tom,
OK, I believe you, but can you tell by sight or feel the difference
between
neoprene o-rings and Buna o-rings? Bob Hawkes

The difference between the Home Depot o-ring and the real McCoy is
that

plumbing o-rings are made out of neoprene and the automotive ones are
(usually) made out of BUNA. The neoprene one will cost you one-tenth
as

much and will usually last half as long since BUNA is more resistant
to

 oil and petroleum by-products.
