Dead on as usual Ian. Before I bought my Ambassador I only wanted an
Eldorado. But in the year of looking I had found that the Ambassador
appealed to me more in its own little ways. As stated the rear drive unit is
a thing of beauty compared to the newer one and the single speedo with the
simple polished housing has its own understated elegance. Sure it would be
nice to have a fresh balanced, blueprinted 1000 cc lump in it but somehow it
doesn't matter when your pulling 70 down your favorite road and the exhaust
is singing and the engine is in one of it's 'sweet' spots. Gotta like it!

Paul,
You would be surprised how well these bikes run if properly tuned.
Seems
that when they get up into the higher rpms they take on a life of
their own.
The thumping two cylinder turns into a sweet humming machine. Hard
to
explain......you will just have to see for yourself :-)
I use to think that the Eldo was the better bike with bigger engine
and 5
speed. Also...I thought that they were more collectible. Truth is
that the
Ambos have some nice characteristics that were lost in the Eldo. The
rear
drive unit is a thing of beauty compared with the Eldos. Also...the
single
speedo nacelle on the earlier models really give the bike a nice
look as
compared to the two instrument cluster.
