Barry:
The one thing that everybody missed so far is that there are two
wheel spindle washers on your front axle. One goes on the outside of
your fork next to the axle nut, and the other goes between the brake hub
and the fork leg on the left side. If you're missing the one on the
inside it would account for the horizontal play in your wheel. I bet my
left nut that this is your problem.
