Well so much for that happy moment.:( Darn thing died AGAIN!! The wire from
the field coil to the solenoid was broken off and just barely touching
inside. Caused starter to work then not and was the main reason for the
smoke. Just got done ordering the new Valeo starter, so Tom I'm going to
need some help here getting this one in without drilling and butchering my
bell housing. I saved your picture you posted, but any other info I need
will be appreciated. The price has gone up to $265 now for it from Auto
Electric International in Southfield, Michigan. They will be shipping next
day air for me so I can install this weekend and get some riding in. :) I
will get my old starter fixed (hopefully) and use it on the Eldo, unless I
win the lottery and buy another Valeo.

Well I got up early this morning and pulled the start and stripped it down
and cleaned everything again. I also pulled the solenoid apart and found the
problem. The contacts inside were all covered in carbon buildup. I guess
this can be expected from something that is probably 32 years old. Lubed
things up, cleaned contacts to make them nice and shiny again and put
everything back together. Connected wires and hit the go button and she
fired right up with NO hesitation and NO smoke!! Let her get warm and shut
her down, waited a bit and she fired right up again. I am so happy now. Now
this weekend can be filled with riding and not wrenching!!!!
