Keith,

What tranny do you have? A 4 or 5 speed? You can get a new updated cover for
the 4 speeds if that is what you have. I think that might be your problem.

Hello All,

Mr. "Patience" here. Update on the shifter return spring and definitely
some help/ideas needed. My mechanic ground down the triple wound return
spring per my direction - didn't want to use the std 2 wound and risk
busting the spring again soon. Anyways, he was able to gring it down
and make it fit (thanks Kev Graf for the info to grind it down, think it
was you who told me to do this?). Here is the strange mystery: He
installed the spring per directions from this board - put the tranny in
2nd gear and install the spring. He was able to do this and it shifted
through all of the gears. BUT.......every time he re-installs the rear
plate, when he tightens the bolts, the spring pops out of place, every
time. Why would this be? What is causing the spring to pop out of
place when installing the rear cover? He says it works perfect without
the cover on, but pops every time the cover is installed. Can't figure
it out. Can it have something to do with the fact that the Guzzi
mechanic replaced the rear casing on the tranny with an Eldorado style
case with new style throwout bearing? Or is there something simple we
are missing that is causing the spring to pop out when installing that
rear cover?

Appreciate any help I can get, want to finally ride this beast - it's
been just over a year since I purchased her. Mechanic says she is
running perfect, carbs all synched and mixtures all set, timing was way
off (part cause of the slow crank problem), valves adjusted (everything
else looked good on the heads), oil leak is fixed - turned out the Guzzi
mechanic installed a std bolt rather than a drain plug bolt where the
gear lube drain hole is where the engine/trans cases meet! Unbelievable
how he messed this up, other than rebuilding the trans and getting it to
actually work (before this return spring issue), generator is all fixed
and the regulator all cleaned up - she's charging great! I have already
installed a new coil and rebuilt Marelli starter. Oh, and if some of
you remember that blinker/4-way flasher problem I had way back, he
solved that too, just needed a new flasher unit and it was fixed.

So, she's itching, and I am dieing, to get on the road, just need to
solve this return spring dilemma. Please help!! In the meantime, my
mechanic is trying to talk me into buying into his auto business and
expanding it into a high performance auto shop and moto guzzi
sales/repair shop, been thinking about it. Ain't nobody in my area that
knows these bikes, there is a definite need here.

Thanx!
