Thanks Gary,

I suppose that this is yet another testimonial for keeping the old points
system.

Interesting to note.... when I was leaving Friday morn at 5am my bike would
not start. No spark. Traced it to dirty points. I had run a file through
them the day before but neglected to clean them afterwards. After swabbing a
little alcohol on them the bike fired right up and ran the 800 miles without
a problem.

By the way...it was nice meeting you. I hope to see you at other rallies in
the future. Just to note...the Md rally looks like it is going to be a
Loopframe jamboree.

Regards....Ian

Ian , I sure hope that the buna petcock seals were the problem but I have
reservations. I was with Tom all the way home. The first sign of a problem
was about 20 miles out. Tom suddenly dropped back and was pointing at his
tank. We stopped after a few miles at reduced speeds, I suggested he run
with both taps open for max flow. We got underway again only to have the
same thing happen again and again. I don't think Tom ever opened both taps
though I did ask him again when we stopped for fuel near Toronto. Shortly
after that fuel stop Tom was again signaling for us to exit, it was
starting
to look like a long day was in the cards. We pulled in to a hotel parking
lot just off the 401 and Tom said he was going to check the point gap. He
found them a little on the closed side ,about .01 mm ,not enough to be a
problem but he reset them anyway. I suggested we bypass the Dyna and Tom
said the Dynas pretty reliable and it should be ok. I asked if he had
provided for bypassing the module as I had suggested when he was putting
the
bike together he said yes but we would have to lift the tank to get at the
connection. Not exactly what I had in mind but better than nothing :). We
put the rig back together ,suited up and Tom hit the starter but after a
few
good spins not a sign of life. We got out of our helmets hooked up a spark
plug to the right lead and NO SPARK AT ALL ! At this point we pulled the
seat, lifted the tank and proceeded to take the redundant Dyna out of the
loop. A quick reassembly and a punch on the starter button and Cedar was
alive and well. The rest of the trip was uneventful save for the brake
lights giving up and the Radio Shack switch in a CEV can for the turn
signal
also going South. But the engine ran fine at speeds of over 80 mph without
a
sign of trouble. Perhaps after cooling down the Dyna is working again but
it
is very prudent to have the provision for bypassing Cedar would have had to
have finished the ride home in a pickup truck The petcock gaskets sure
didn't cause the loss of spark.
