yup, Think'in of peicing together a 75 FLH myself, need a frame first. now
that the Ambo's done. The Harley can take 10 years for all I care. Figure
I'll try to remember all that stuff I crammed into my head that year.

I bought a 73' police model that was and is beautiful. The motorcycle,
however wasn't running when I bought it. I was able to get the bike
running quite easily with just routine maintenance. I have put a lot of
miles on the bike and all I do now is clean it once in a while. I still
get excited
just to get on and ride. I bought the bike because I wanted something
different, and to have something to tinker with. I wasn't getting my
"tinkering fix" adequately fullfilled with this dependable 73' police
model
so I purchased another Guzzi. I bought a 70'Ambo basket case and I'm
making
good progress. Hell, if the Ambo proves to be as dependable as the
police
model, I might have to buy an AMF era Harley just to get the tinkering
monkey off my back.

I have to agree with Dave here, As for buying a loop for 10,000? It
better
be worth it. Would I? Naw.. Just too much $, for allot of motorcycles,
that's just me.
People are better off buying one that HAS to be gone though. 1) you
learn
how things work, which gives you a better understanding, down the line
WHEN
things break. 2) you have no one to blame but yourself when it does
break.3)
YOU decide if, when and where to cut corners and have no one to blame
but
yourself if it don't work, and get to let us in on the secret when it
does
work out!
I bought mine in AZ for around $4ooo. Daily ride for a good 2 years.
Never
failed on me.
In the last couple of years I've probably put another $4000 into it. One
time I had my trans out 6 separate time to have a local dealer look at
it,
He swore something was wrong on my end. It wasn't, No real sense in
bitch'in
about it. I just don't deal with them, if someone was to ask me in
person
I'll tell them HOW I feel.
After that I learned the best way to get something done and done right
to
your satisfaction is to do it yourself.
Not once did I think that I'd never have to deal with fixin' the bike.
Shit
man I went to Harley school! I can fix anything!!! (shoulda went to
Guzzi
school!)
My point being is that these are not the get on and ride bikes, not as
bad
as a brit and not as good as a jap. We all know this.
If you don't love to tinker, buy new
I mean tinker, fix it right the first time then look forward to your
tinkering!

Ian, I can't believe that's all the miles you have on that 70 Ambo, is
it a
trailer /garage queen or something? Norine has twice that already.

As for loopframes, my thoughts:
The sweetest engine ever made for a bike, runs forever, and doesn't ask
for
much other than clean oil, and a tweek once and a while.
Aftermarket ignition? Why? the stock one will always get you hame, carry
a
spare set of points and condenser, cap and rotor just in case. Dual
point
ignigion? Why in the world would you want to introduce that kind of a
problem? To run better, when how? what rpm? If you want a race bike you
don't
need a loopframe. To make it easier to set up? No way! No added value,
just
a
problem (all this is my opinion of course, but kinda backed up with
experience) If your loopframe engine is set up properly, you don't need
chokes and you don't need a $500.00 starter to make it start, a quick
touch
of the button and she roars (I can't imagine wearing out a starter on a
properly tuned loopframe)! If it doesn't something is wrong. It's a
simple
process, compression? spark? fuel? runs! if not is the spark at the
right
time? is the fuel good? Wireing? I always rewire and overly simplify it,
I
dislike the origional wiring and consider it much too complicated. In
reality
all you need to make a loopframe run is a wire from the battery to the
coil!
An easy way to troubleshoot electrical problems, and a nice backup just
in
case, always carry a jumper wire. There is nothing with a loopframe,
they
are
the sweetest ride around, I can't explain how cool they are just purring
down
the road, you guys that RIDE them know what I mean, you have to
experience
it
I enjoy my loopframe more than my EV, and I never forget to turn off
the
turn signal on the loopframe. (maybe that's because I use my hand) If
you
want a loopframe, you can go several ways, a used one, (don't forget
they
are
30 years old) you can ride it and bear with it, you'll have problems
here
and
there, or you can restore it to origional and make a few upgrades
perhaps,
or
you can buy one restored and then you deal with who put it together and
how.
They are simple bikes and that is one of the things that makes them
cool. If
you don't want to put the mechanicals right, then you will heat up your
starter trying to get going, flood easily and start hard because your
compression is low, have weak or intermitent spark because of bad
wiring.
Fix
it, it's much more fun that way! I know Guzzzi riders are cheap at
heart,
but
if you want the problems to go away, make things right without cutting
corners and hit the road on two wheels.

I'm just ranting here having a good time.

One more thing a lot of people have payed a lot of money to a certain
dealer
and it seems they all have one thing in common, Problems! You can always
expect a few bugs, but they shouldn't be major.

Oh yes and my loopframe is extremely reliable!

Sorry to hear that you are having troubles with your bike.

I have two bikes. On my 69 Ambo I have ridden over 3,000 miles without
a
 problem. My restored 70 Ambo has over 1000 miles on her now without a
problem.

This past weekend while at the Ontario Rally I remember my riding
buddy
 Hubert Curran say that through his 100,000+ miles he has had little
trouble
 on his Eldo.

Any mechanical being can break down. I can remember my dad telling me
once
 that he had this old Olds car. He was forever putting money into the
car
 and he was at the point of getting rid of it. But he said he didn't
and at
 some point he stopped having the fix the car and all he did was put
gas
and
 oil in the thing for the next two years.

Hopefully you will get to that point.

I am used to my old R90/6 , just put gas and go. Just like a car .

 year I traded it in on a "total restored " eldorado from Harpers,and
that was the begining of constant problems ..no not the motor but all
the rest .....Just like an old british bike. Does anyone on this page
actualy have a reliable loopframe that is sutable for touring? Me I
have just about had enof... next year I will ride insted of fixing
..anyone want to swap a BMW for an eldo??
