Certainly and effective solution. But seems it would look kinda nasty.
Perhaps you just need to replace the spring?

Years ago I had an Eldo. It leaked badly out the hole in the shift detent
plug on the left side. I drille the hole slightly larger to 1/8" and
inserted a small tube and soldered in place. Then attached a fish tank air
hose and ran it up into the battery compartment in an inverted U. You
could
see oil in the tubing, but it never went more than a couple inches high.
