Andy,
I had this same sort of an issue with my Eldorado when
I checked compression. I had one original chrome
cylinder replaced with a "new" nikasil barrel w/"new"
piston (or at least I thought so). I couldn't get it
to run well and checked compression and had almost 30#
difference between them, with the new cylinder higher
than the original chrome, but with the chrome one with
good compression. After running like this for a few
hundred miles and pondering this for some time, I
decided to tear down the chrome side and take a look
at it - it turned out that the piston on that side was
slightly galled and I found 3 pin holes in the chrome
bore. I had also tried to send this cylinder and
piston off to a shop in Illinois and have them
unchrome it, nikasil it and match it to my piston -
they were the ones that told me that they couldn't do
it with this piston and barrel because of the galling.
So since the "new" nikasil cylinder was a replate and
I was suspicious of it too, I decided to replace both
sides with brand new nikasils from Guilardoni (sp?).
I put these in myself. Seems to run much smoother now
and I don't worry about those old chrome bores any
more. I should have done this right from the start
but I thought that the shop I brought it to would to
the job right and replace both sides, but they didn't.
Replacing both barrels is certainly not a cheap way
to go, but I think it worked. I got my
cylinders/pistons/wrist pins/circlips/rings as a set
from MG Cycle (608-862-2300). They are great!
Regards,
Tom
