ron-
thanks- well, it sure has me depressed! when it fired, i wound it up to
about 2500rpm', for 10 minutes or so. i was thinkin' that the stp is
preventing the rings from seating. man, i just don't know.....

I've done a lot of engine O/Hs , bike and autos. I may be from the old
school but I always use the cheapest non-detergent oil I can find, or if not
ND I go for the cheapest/nastiest bottom shelf oil that is to be had. Either
straight 30 wt. or 20/50.
The STP and motor honey stuff isn't for a motor that has not been run in
yet, it lubricates too well.
I dip the pistons in the same oil that I'm going to run in it, usually
in a coffee can, leave them in long enough to get under the rings, then
stagger the rings and put them in a dark hole.
With a motorcycle I use a couple of fans to keep things reasonably
cool,
that way I can fool with the timing and carb adjustments and at the same
time
the engine parts are getting to know one another. A little heat isn't going
to hurt a thing.
And another rule I impose on myself is I don't 'blip' the throttle, at
least until the rings have seated. In fact the rings will be seated or near
seated before I even ride the machine.
On a motorcycle I run the break-in oil a couple hundred miles or less,
being nice to it as I know I have S--t oil in it. Then just put in the oil
and run it, break-in is over. The bike will 'run-in ' on its own accord. Run
it up to red line, but don't hold it there, IMO Moto Guzzis will tell you
when your in the sweet spot, even without a tachometer.
As for the low compression on one side, do a leak-down, look for the
simple stuff first before tearing into it, like a tight valve, or maybe the
throttle slide wasn't all the way open while you were checking the
compression?,try doing the compression check after its sat all night and
before its been started.
I think if it were mine I'd dump the oil, put in your choice of Dino oil
in. Run it for a while until all the slickum STP dissipates, if that is
possible. Give it a little time, it may come out of it.
Well I feel a storm front approaching,
Ron
