I've done it.
You do have the earlier threaded port and not the later (Tonti) studs?
There are available new inserts made from much harder material that can be
installed. It does require a vertical mill and the proper welding equipment.
If you don't have the stuff available I'm sure one of the better dealers
can do it for you.

Right now I've got a head with two studs welded on and nuts holding on
the exhaust nut. Looks pretty ugly.
