This depends on if it's a 4 or 5 speed, doesn't it? The 4's have a seperate
cover that houses the return spring. upper left side. there's one hole in
this housing and it's not big enough to cause your gears hassle, unless your
spring broke into 50, 000 little pieces. Usually the break in 2. 5 speed
theres more danger of pieces falling to the bottom of the trans.

Another thing you may want to consider by pulling the trans.is it can be
thoroughly inspected. Those broken spring pieces can do some serious damage.I
learned the hard way on this one!

Derek>thanks for the heads up.I have now decided to pull the swingarm and
related parts to get at the back cover and replace the spring. The thought
of
pulling the engine/trans is best left to the mechanics.............KO

Everyone will tell you that you have to remove the tranny and that to do
this it needs to come out with the engine. Not true!
However, to get the tranny out without the engine probably isn't really
worth the effort. It's involve rotating the engine up on the front
mount
while doing amazingly close quarter manouvering of the tranny. It
cannot
be measured in inches but rather millimetres to know how fucking tight
this
 manouver is.
The good news is you can remove the cover enough with everything in situ
to
replace the spring. I cannot remember if you have to pull the swingarm
back
or not, but, that part is eassssssssssssy and certainly gives you a ton
more finger room.

Guzzi guys and gals>this morning I went for a ride with the Sportster
Group thru the Hudson Valley. My LAPD shifter return spring crapped out
at the first stop. The heel-toe shifter just flops about not returning
to

center for those usual "clunky" shifts. Now all shifts are done by
rocking the shifter back to the central point and then shifting. What am
I looking at to repair this ???Does the trans have to come out ??Thanks
in advance...........
