Folks,
When aluminum holes grow because of heat, the Inner diameter also grows. I
think the previous message (or two) was correct
when it described the steel type nuts as being a problem. I can tell you
that aluminum Coefficient of thermal expansion,
CTE, is about 10X that of steel. My bike has the original brass type nuts
which haven't leaked yet. I check them occassionally for torque. The thing I
think we have to be careful of is over tightening. I think if the nuts were
tightened hot, they could actually overload the torque when they cooled. I
think a solution might be similar to the automoble approach. We might want
to see if it is possible to use exhaust gasket material, Aluminum, Copper,
High-temp fiber, reinforced silicone etc. between the aluminum head
and the steel flange of the header pipe.

I guess when I tightened mine hot I was thinking that the exhaust port was
a
 larger size than normal,

I guess this is what I was really asking.

As the aluminum of the head "grows" with heat, doen't it expand in
all directions, which would mean the circumference (inside) of the
port would actually shrink?

Where's a mechanical engineer when you need one?
