Tom,

If I recall, there is a mention of this problem in Guzziology. It seems
that the clutch plates wear a groove in either the trans input hub, or
the flywheel, and cause the clutch to be notchy. It probably is more
pronounced in first gear because of the greater stresses involved with
the bike being stopped, and the fact that the input shaft on the trans
is not turning, which would help the plates to move past the notch.

The fix. Take the clutch apart and inspect the input hub for the trans
and the inner teeth on the flywheel. (Chances are it will be the hub.)
You can replace the hub, or if you wanna' go cheap, use a dremel tool or
file and remove the ridge on the hub that has been created by the
friction plates. (Joe Eish told me about this one.) In any case, when
you reassemble the engine to the trans, use a thin coat of moly paste or
moly spray on the inside teeth of the flywheel and on the outside of the
trans input hub.

Sorry about the first post.

Well, the clutch on my G-5 is acting up. When starting off in first
gear, the bike wants to pull a wheelie. It is really hard to slip it for

a smooth start. It works fine for every other gear, up and down, when
riding.
