 The front brakes have an adjustable piece that fits between the "actuating
levers." Is this piece held in with pins and cotter pins or nuts & bolts?

I assume you are talking about the rod that sits between the brake
actuating cams? I believe that it is a threaded rod that you adjust with a
nut. The part that you attach to the brake cam is attached with a cotter
pin and the threaded rod screws into that. I'm sure someone can send you a
schematic from the parts manual.
