I can start mine with just about anything that will fit in the ingnition. A
buddy started it one day while I was busy at work with his pocketknife.
Surprised the hell out of me. Shhh! just don't tell anyone.

Fellow Listers,

I know that many of us have had no keys or probably lost keys when we get
these bikes that have been idle or neglected for a time. As a slightly
different take on the tool swap idea, I've thought for a long time that a
repository of ignition key cylinder numbers and "reference keys" might be
helpful. We know which key blanks fit the ignitions but don't know how they
should be cut. I personnally had to have a locksmith fabricate a key to
work. It is warped and rough, but that's what he had to do to get it to
work.

It has always been my assumption that the number stamped on the face next to
the key slot would tell us which key should work.

My idea is this. We could keep a listing of cylinder numbers listed on an
excel spreadsheet. We could either reference the person who has that key,
and contact them to get a copy of it (I'm not sure I like the idea of having
a list of which keys fit our bikes) or by having members send a duplicated
key to the holder of the list. This would become the "Original and be
stamped with the cylinder number. Should someone need a key, they ask the
keeper of the keys for a duplicate. We could then get loop replacement keys
for the cost of getting one cut and a bit of postage.

On the other hand, if this number does not represent the cut of the key,
then my idea goes straight to the circular file.

A good idea????
