Jeff,
Pardon the dumb question but can you slightly knotch the studs and insert
slotted screwdriver and back them out? Bob

Well after a really helpful conversation with
Mark@MG Classics on friday I attacked my tranny
this week-end.

The good news: The removal and installation of the
input shaft seal went exactly as Mark descibed. Piece
of cake. Thanks again Mark!

The bad news: since I had the tranny out, I decided to
clean up the housing a bit. I had the tranny nudged over
on it's side and gear oil just started pouring out the
output shaft seal. Looks like this one is bad, too. I
guess this explains all the goo inside my CV joint boot.

It looks like a PO filled the tranny WAY past full and I'm
guessing this was too much for the seals to bear. It looks
like the rear seal is a bit harder to do than the front,
but it's better than the alternative :(.

Oh yeah, even more bad news. four of the studs that hold the
tranny to the engine were stripped -- the nuts were epoxied(!)
on. I have a feeling I'll have quite a time getting the studs
to unscrew from the engine case.

I have a feeling that by the time I get it back together I'll
have either repaired, replaced or fixed every square inch of
it. :)
