I did not know that. Sure feels like rubber. And I have a 10 year old
gasket on the bmw /5 tank. But that is just my one anecdotal experience.
I suppose if you could find some suitable material in that thickness it
would work just as well. Regular autoshops (not schmucks and the like)
should be able to get the right stuff.

The point is that these things are so dead nuts simple that making a
gasket is really no trouble at all

rubber is clay based and is not meant for petroleum of any sort.....I
use to
make the stuff...

I fixed the gas cap on mine using a sheet of that red ~1/8" thick
plumber's gasket. Disassemble the cap, cut the sheet to match the
old
 
 gasket, reassemble.


Both of the crusty gas caps in my pile have super hardened dried up
old
 black rubber gaskets. Are these still available? Also, I have two
alumininum and two chrome plated brass petcocks. Are the gaskets
available for either?
