it is also easily possible to snap off the part of the bearing carrier
casting the mounting holes are drilled in even when using a tool that
approximates the factory item. i know, i've done it.

I had gotten a bunch of stock metal to make a main bearing puller (yes yes
I
know the gentleman makes fine tools, but making my own stuff is partly why
I
do this) I was checking a couple of bolts for fit in the pulling holes
(for
those not having been in that far, a couple of the main bearing carrier
mount holes are threaded holes for using the puller tool) The threads were
gummed up with poo from assembly and years of use. my tap didn;t go in far
enough to clean the threads out. SO I used the bolts I had gotten to use
on
the puller. I had to use a wrench to gently work them through the goo. I
went about half a turn too far. I'll be god damned if the carrier didn't
move. I took it about a turn or two out, backed off the bolts, slipped a
quarter behind each hole and used the bolts to bring the carrier the rest
of
the way out. Did that on two out of three blocks. I should note some
caution
here. if the carrier is very stuck, you could force the larger bolt enough
into the hole to bugger up the mounting threads in the case. SO not a
technique for the cautious.
