bolting the lower triple tree to the forks and putting the upper tree in place (on my bench) is that the steering spindle is about 1/8" off center of the hole in the upper triple tree. When I had everything on the bike and the steering spindle bolted on, the fork tubes were about 1/8" out of alignment from the upper tree, and I had to really fight to get them through the upper tree. What I've surmised from this is that somehow the lower tree is tweaked. I checked the fork tubes with a straight edge and they're fine. So, the project is momentarily stalled until I find another lower triple tree. ANYBODY OUT THERE GOT ONE THEY WANNA SELL CHEAP? Or reasonably? I'm really in need here.
